Baby = One Month Old - How Things Change
Melina is now a month old - we go for a five-week checkup on Monday. It’s so incredible to see little changes at this stage. Here are some observations in my little one month old baby girl:
- Her eyebrows are growing in - with a little Auburn highlight to them
- Her hair is filling in a little - sometimes it looks like the color of honey right after we shampoo it and it dries
- 21 inches - that’s what I think she measures now - yes, I actually held a ruler up to her while she slept - giggles
- Mommy is much better changing a diaper now than before - she still occasionally catches me with a tinkle moment, but no more mattress malfunctions now that we have a changing table - think she’s beginning to outgrow the smallest diaper size of Swaddlers or Newborns up to 8 lbs.
- Her eyes are opening up a lot more - I think she’s going to have the big eyes my Mom passed onto me - Mom calls them Marty Feldman eyes - they are VERY expressive eyes - very funny sometimes
- Her eyes sometimes look like they are following a fly buzzing around my head, or one of the many animal (Max, Misha and Cody?) spirits wandering around in my house, when she’s trying to pass gas or poop. Her eyes get really funky - - hope that’s normal :-) I think I should change her diet ….
- She now likes both boobs - YAY! Mission accomplished - whew! It only took a month of a lot of hard work and persistence!
- When she stretches, I say stretch - and she responds with another stretch - to convince Mommy she already knows what that means - hee hee.
- She can hold her neck up from tummy time for a half a second -
- Mommy is doing better with spit-up after formula, burping, and figuring out which bottle is best for her
- Melina likes upright time in the car-seat during the day - and seems to do just fine amusing herself without binky most of the time
- When Mommy is dumb enough to give her binky, that sets off a crazy time of loud mouthing - as if she’s angry, angry and telling me about it - it’s hilarious to hear her with this thing in the beginning - and then if it drops out of her mouth - then she cries - and Mommy runs to baby to put binky back in - creating a real healthy addiction and response communication
- Despite more awake time during the day, in upright car seat, and occasional naps throughout the day, Melina still is wide awake from midnight to 1 a.m. or so on many nights
- Despite some occasional abdominal soreness and pain throbs after I’ve done too much in a given day, Mommy is feeling much better from c-section. Stitches and tape still hasn’t come off -
- Mommy wonders what “sleeping through the night” really means - to her it means going to bed at 11 p.m. and not waking up at all for anything until 7 a.m. or later, preferably
- Melina is beginning to make those cooing noises - a couple of shrieks as I’ve mentioned in the past week - and what sounds almost like a giggle
- Melina has also developed a different cry - noticed when Mommy bonked her tiny little head holding her walking out of the bathroom - note to self - watch little Melina’s head when going through doorways - Mommy does not want to bonk lil Melina’s head as often as she has bonked her head.
- Melina continues to sound like a cross between a horse and a pig - she whinnies sometimes, and grunts often.
We’ve survived delivery & arrival, jaundice, two trips to Children’s Hospital, a spinal cord ultrasound, three doctor’s visits, one month of breastfeeding and supplemental pumping. We’ve survived a few business phone calls and several drop-ins at the house. All in all, we’ve done our first month quite well - for it being first month on our own.
